From the very first moment my eyes saw her I was in love. Could I even look at another City? I was hooked into the City of Lights. Paris. and the Artist who accepted me as one of at Shakespeare and company's resident Poet. And a friend and fellow Comrade who shared a similar background as me in his childhood in China. His Father was a Foreign attaché there and I was born there. So he and I had a link that lasted until his death in late 2011. I was a resident Poet for several seasons. And resident Sunday Tea hostess. sharing the kitchen above the store with the resident Cats and roaches.
Needless to say I fell in love with her then and to this day remain a loyal and amazed guest. And I was the lucky one be surrounded by Poets, Musicians, and Artist from the beginning, Paris took me into the fold and I became one of the regulars, ( I had always known I was a bit of a Bohemian and now others were including me in that sacred lot). Paris has been welcoming me in one way or another for many years.
Of course in my early years in the 60s and 70s I had been to San Francisco where North Beach was a thriving Mecca for Scholars, Artists and Hippies. And I felt that it was the first time I could appreciate San Francisco. Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Alan Ginsburg were among the great Poets that hung out at City Lights Book shop there and in Paris they were (Like me), regulars of Shakespeare's..
Ginsburg and I shared the same bed when we were in Paris at Shakespeare's and crashed separately there, which was a standing joke like "Hey were you sleeping in Ginsburg's bed last night").
Those were my earliest memories of Paris and why I came back at least twice a year as my Holidays permitted and anytime I was free to travel.
There were basically two locations I traveled to often in Europe, Paris and Barcelona. Later when my Motherland opened up to me around 2004-5, I began my affair with my hometown which they say is Paris of the East, Shanghai China. I am reminded of how lucky to have been and continue to be included as part of the Artist movement in Paris. J'adore.
